Just got this little gem in an email:

Whew!
As it happens, I pulled out my trusty copy of Self-Editing for Content Writers, and, lo and behold! I read this:
Kick off vs. kickoff. Verb form two words; one word as noun.
If you try the two terms out in two different sentences, you can hear the difference.
